A credit report is broken down into about 4 sections.
1. Personal Information (identifying information)
2. Your Credit History
3. Collection Accounts
4. Public Records
5. Inquiries
Your personal information or indentifying information is all about you. Make sure that when you get your credit report everything that pertains to your personal information is up to date and accurate.
Along with your personal information you will find your date of birth, telephone number, employer information and possibly your telephone number.
Your Credit History will contain the name of the creditor, portions of the account number (for security reasons).
The date that you opened the account, the type of credit it is, it will list if it is a joint account, total amount of the credit limit or loan, the highest balance you’ve reached per your credit limit, how much your payments are monthly, and then your status of the account meaning if you pay on time, have been late etc.,
The Collection Accounts section will include all of the Collection Agencies or Collection Attorneys that are after you, their information, the name of the account, the account number, your high balance. And of course what you owe them.
The Public Records section is where all of your judgments, tax liens, any bankruptcies are listed.
The Inquiries Section is a list of Creditors or Collection Agencies that have requested your Credit Report. Here you will find their names, their addresses, and their telephone numbers.
Hard Inquires are reported for 2 years. Hard inquiries are tacked on by creditors who you have requested credit through.
Soft Inquiries are through companies that are checking your report to offer you their Credit Offers.
